Drum Major Instinct

Lately my mind has been flooded with thoughts of financial stability & legacy. The stuff sleepless nights are made of.

My neighborhood is currently on the verge of a transition from a lower-middle income area to a neighborhood filled with luxury apartments and high property values. I'm very defensive about the changes to come but in the same breath excited to witness gentrification first hand. Anyways, I went to a community forum in an effort to be an informed resident. While discussing the expected upward trend of housing prices one of the panel members mentioned a sermon by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. called Drum Major Instinct. Other than the obvious, I had really never listened to any of Martin Luther King Jr.'s speeches.

Drum Major Instinct was so timely for me. It was really a refocusing moment. A reminder to be content. A reminder that what I leave behind in material possessions is not nearly as important as the impression I leave upon people's lives. I wish to be great. I want to leave a long lasting impression. I have the drum major instinct and am unapologetic for wanting greatness. The challenge comes in focusing that drive not on myself but outward. Being selfless versus being selfish. Harnessing the drum major instinct. Thank you Dr. King Jr. Your words continue to inspire and challenge.

Happy Black History Month
